Great Work Completed on Cemeteries Nature Walk

In the last couple of years following the completion of the Ridges Cemeteries Nature Walk, frequent rains and poor drainage caused considerable surface erosion. This summer, NAMI decided to do something to permanently improve the surface and overall durability of that facility. With monies from the 317 Board and from NAMI's ODMH fund for perpetual upkeep of the Nature Walk, NAMI hired J.C. Trivett Excavating to ditch, install culverts, and resurface the walk. Jim Trivett, who did the work, not only did what we asked, but also built two beautiful stone benches where hikers can sit, catch their breath, and enjoy the quiet beauty surrounding them.

The Walk also winds its way around the Peter E. Nagy Memorial Pond, which had been rebuilt as part of the overall beautification project. Last year, NAMI President Adrienne Nagy and her grandaughter Emily planted lillies in the pond which memorializes Adrienne's son. This year, the lillies are up and flowering nicely.

In good weather, the restored Cemeteries and the Ridges Cemeteries Nature Walk are visted by around 500 hikers, joggers, and nature enthusiasts per week. Ohio University now prohibits Halloween and other disrespectful activities. The era in which those hallowed grounds were viewed as a place of witches, ghosts, and superstition seems to be receding into the past.
